How to calculate drywall
The formula: sheets = ceil( wall area × (1 + waste) ÷ 32 )
- Measure the length and height of the wall (or total wall area) in feet.
- Multiply length × height to get the area in square feet.
- Add about 10% for waste, cuts, and mistakes.
- Divide by 32 (a 4×8 sheet) and round up to get the number of sheets.
Prices shown are national averages (as of 2026-06) and vary by region, brand, and supplier. They are estimates, not quotes.
How much does drywall cost to install?
Drywall materials cost about $12–$20 per 4×8 sheet — roughly $0.40–$0.65 per square foot. Hung and finished by a pro, drywall typically runs $1.50–$3.50 per square foot installed, including labor, tape, joint compound, and screws. For a 12×12 room (about 600 sq ft of wall and ceiling), that's roughly $900–$2,100 installed, versus $250–$450 in materials if you hang it yourself.
What drives the cost
- Ceilings cost more than walls — they are slower to hang and harder to hold up.
- Finish level: a smooth Level 5 finish for raking light costs more than a standard Level 4.
- Moisture-resistant (green board) and fire-rated (Type X) sheets cost more than standard board.
- High ceilings, stairwells, and tight rooms raise the labor rate.
- Patches and repairs often cost more per square foot than a clean new install.
DIY vs. hiring a pro
Hanging the board is the easy part — taping, mudding, and sanding to a flat finish is the skill that separates a DIY job from a pro one. For a closet or garage, DIY is reasonable. For a whole room, or any wall that catches side light, the finish quality usually justifies hiring out. Get at least three local quotes and check what finish level each one includes before you compare prices.

Drywall FAQ
How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12×8 wall?+
A 12 ft × 8 ft wall is 96 square feet. With 10% waste that is about 106 sq ft, or 4 sheets of 4×8 drywall (32 sq ft each).
What size drywall sheet should I use?+
4×8 ft is the most common and easiest to handle. 4×12 sheets cover more area with fewer seams but are heavier and harder to move.
How much does it cost to drywall a 12×12 room?+
A 12×12 room has roughly 600 sq ft of wall and ceiling. At $1.50–$3.50 per square foot installed, that is about $900–$2,100 for a pro, or roughly $250–$450 in materials if you hang it yourself.
Is it cheaper to hang drywall yourself?+
On materials, yes — DIY skips the labor, which is most of the cost. But finishing (taping and mudding) is hard to do cleanly, so weigh the learning curve and the look you want before deciding.
